چکیده

This work investigates heat transfer and phase change during picosecond laser ablation of nickel. In this study, ablation of nickel is studied using a mode-locked 25 ps (FWHM) Nd:YAG laser. The threshold fluence for mass removal (ablation) is experimentally determined. Numerical calculations of the transient temperature distribution and kinetics of the solid–liquid and liquid–vapor phase change interfaces are performed. The results show that evaporation is negligible at the free surface, resulting in superheating of liquid to near 0.9Tcr, at which temperature homogeneous nucleation will result in an explosive phase transformation, removing part of the molten layer. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Heating of opaque surfaces by picosecond laser pulses

Heat conduction after the application of a short laser pulse on opaque matter is calculated assuming simplifying conditions. The effect of the simplifications on real systems is discussed. It is found that Fourier’s law may reasonably be applied considerably above the temperature of vaporization of the substrate. Calculated and experimental ablation at nickel surfaces using fluences below thres...

Sub-picosecond UV laser ablation of metals

Laser ablation of Nickel, Copper, Molybdenum, Indium, Tungsten and Gold by short ultraviolet laser pulses (0.5 ps, 248 nm) in vacuum is reported for the first time. For Nickel and Indium, ablation is also studied in air to demonstrate the influence of the ambient atmosphere. Metal ablation in air is significantly less efficient than in vacuum due to redeposition of ablated material. The ablatio...

Metal ablation by picosecond laser pulses: A hybrid simulation

We investigate picosecond laser ablation of metals using a hybrid simulation scheme. Laser energy input into the electron system and heat conduction within it are modeled using a finite-difference scheme for solving the heat conduction equation. Atom motion in the near-surface part ~72 nm! of the sample is modeled using molecular dynamics. Energy transfer between the electronic and atomic subsy...

Numerical Simulation Of Heat Affected Zone Microstructure During Laser Surface Melting

Microstructural changes during laser welding and laser surface treatment has been regarded by many researchers. Most researches have focused on studying the effect of various process parameters on the size and microstructure of the heat affected zone. But some studies show that the initial microstructure of the base metal can also affect the heat affected zone dimensions and final microstructur...
